A judgment defendant in every civil case must pay a bond or other security as a condition of appeal. This situation is different than usual because of the outlandish size of the judgment and the flimsy legal grounds on which it rests.

So you don’t HAVE to post the bond to appeal, it’s just they can take your assets in the interim while the appeal is pending if you don’t.
