The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the manufacturer after Sam Salehpour, a Boeing engineer of more than 10 years, spoke out.

Salehpour said that “the problems stemmed from changes in how the enormous sections were fitted and fastened together in the assembly line.” He added that the components of the fuselage all come from different manufacturers and are not all the same shape.

Catastrophic failure from metal fatigue grounded the UK's first passenger jet.

So yes, it's a serious issue.

The investigators found that a small weakness such as this would quickly deteriorate under pressure, and would rapidly lead to a sudden and general break-up of the fuselage.

Interesting. There is a big difference between commercial and government contracts. However, if our spiraling budget deficits lead to cuts in military spending, then I could see a company like Lockheed purchasing Boeing in order to replace military with commercial aircraft production.

If Boeing merges with Lockheed-Martin they could change their name to Boeing-Lockheed-Martin, or BLM.

That would seem quite appropriate.

But, but, but, the people who designed them are woke and ethnically and culturally diverse! Who cares if their planes fall out of the sky because they suck at doing their jobs?

I think that they have proved themselves with millions of miles and uncounted flight hours.

The manufacturing scourge of outsourcing. Quality control is the easist to lose and hardest to keep, if you are not running everything.

The Comet was a design error that was not caught due to improperly conducted fatigue testing. The plane ws supposedly screwed together properly.

Current Boeing is just shoddy construction outsourced to the lowest priced contractor. (following the example of MacDonnell Douglas)

But I wouldn’t trust Boeing fatigue testing to be done properly at this point, either.

Boeing is a vital company to the US, from commercial aircraft to military applications, but they have been taken over by woke idiot and bean counters who have gotten away from their core mission, now they are in a world of hurt especially if one of their planes breaks up for no reason and kills a bunch of people.

Lockheed already crapped out of the commercial market with the L1011. I don’t see how Round 2 would go better.

What caused the breakups on the DeHaviland Comets was square windows. The square shape cause stress risers at the corners. The other thing was that the new jet had much more rapid pressure cycles due to increased rates of climb and descent. The two combined to cause cracks to radiate from the square corners. That is why all modern airlines have windows with rounded corners or a round or oval shape. An engineer discovered this by submerging a comet fuselage in a tank of water and subjecting it to a series of rapid compresssion/decompression cycles.

There was also a movie about it — in the movie they mounted a fuselage and vibrated it for days or weeks to simulate the inflight stresses until it failed from metal fatigue.

And yes, the BBC article from 1954 I cited said “...the investigators had found that up to 70% of the aircraft’s ultimate stress under pressure was concentrated on the corners of the aircraft’s windows”.
