Just to put this looming Great Soviet Empire victory in perspective for US readers Chasiv Yar is a “city” the same size as Picayune, MS a town that can barely muster two grocery stores.

About the size of Iwo Jima and Tinian too. For some reason, the US wasted its time taking those useless places, just rocks in the ocean, thousands of miles from Japan. Weird how militaries do that....

Yep that's a good point, it was necessary to take and control, Iwo Jima and Tinian, even though they were thousands of miles from Japan, AND the US.

While Chasiv Yar is high ground and rubs against Russia.

I wonder why the Russians are gonna take it?

The US did not plan on fighting a hundred Iwo Jimas and what happens when Putin wins? Ethnic cleansing and a long brutal guerilla war. It is Russia that cannot win and Russia that has already suffered strategic defeat by bringing Sweden and Finland into NATO and convincing Poland to massively rearm and the Germans that they too must prepare for war. You cannot afford this victory. You have already squandered the tawdry military legacy of 70 years of totalitarian rule and will never be able to rebuild what you had when the war broke out.

Chasiv Yar had a prewar population of about 12000. Occupies strategic crossroads and has been touted as being “heavily defended” by Ukrainian forces because it is the gateway to lightly defended lands to the west. Sort of like Bastogne, pretty much a nothing of a Belgian town but the German Army needed its roads to continue their offensive. idk anything about Picayune MS, nor should I.
