Chinese hackers are preparing to launch a major attack on critical U.S. infrastructure and have already infiltrated multiple companies according to the FBI.

FBI Director Chris Wray revealed today China is developing the capability to cause significant damage to our critical infrastructure at a time of their choosing. The only question is the time to launch a catastrophic blow.

“China is developing the ability to physically wreak havoc on our critical infrastructure at a time of its choosing,” Wray said at the 2024 Vanderbilt Summit on Modern Conflict and Emerging Threats. “Its plan is to land low blows against civilian infrastructure to try to induce panic.”

According to Wray, an ongoing Chinese hacking campaign known as Volt Typhoon has successfully infiltrated several American companies in telecommunications, energy, water, and other critical sectors. 23 pipeline operators are being targeted.

According to Reuters, Wray went on to note that China’s hackers operated a series of botnets, which are constellations of compromised personal computers and servers around the globe to hide their nefarious cyber actions. Private sector American technology and cybersecurity companies previously attributed Volt Typhoon to China, including reports by security researchers with Microsoft and Google.

Reuters reports that a Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson claimed the Volt Typhoon was unrelated to China’s government but is a criminal ransomware group.

China’s Embassy in Washington released the following statement in response to the MFA spokesperson’s comment.

If only there was at least one FReeper encouraging people to be more self-reliant. If only.

Don’t be an idiot.

Anybody with two brain cells to rub together that has anything at all to do with that area of work can see that. I’ve seen it.

Ok. Be more self-reliant. :-|

Actually, there have been many prepper threads here. Did you miss them all?

I was being sarcastic. I’m one of the “preppers” posting on FR. I mainly focus on energy self-reliance (80% of all the energy my home consumes comes from solar, including charging my EV to drive it 15K to 16K miles per year — not counting charging done on road trips).

Have years of executives and management having home computers and smart phones and dealing with all the fears of online banking, phishing emails, the creative penetration of spam calling and texts, and all the online concerns in their personal and children’s lives made them more willing to listen to the computer nerds online security concerns than they were 20 or 30 years ago?

Notice how the FBI never gets ahead of anything - they just watch it develop and then tell us - “Oopsy - we let the bad guys get to us again - but we’re doing great persecuting President Trump”.... FBI is a useless entity except as a weapon against American Citizens.

“Hacking is dangerous.
That to me would mean an act of war by China and we would have to fight the rotten bastards”

Even the UN has deemed cyberattacks carry the same value as physical acts of war.

They first backed this up in 2015, sanctioning the IDF’s aerial bombing of an ISIS cyber facility in response to a cyber attack against Israel’s infrastructure.

“I do realize as I work in IT Security...severe pain is due Americans in order to wake up.”

100%. I also work in cyber. Based soley on the importance companies place on security, it’s pretty easy to tell who’s been bit, and who hasn’t.

Might as well be an EMP...

“You can’t laugh off ending sewage treatment for a city or two. It would result in disease and death.
Same with shutoff of clean water. No place for human waste for days.
And end of cell phones and internet. Heat off in winter with no electricity. No air conditioning in summer in sealed tall buildings.”

Screw the Chinese hacking attacks, how many Trump supporters did the FBI raid and arrest last night! Those are the real enemy of Democracy! What we are a Constitutional Republic?

Well at least charge those Trump supporters with failure to buy Bud Light beer, that’s a thought crime! No sense wasting all that time and man, women, transgender power on raids if the FBI can’t just dream up a charge.

I am just skeptical of anything that comes out of that traitor's mouth. I believe that hackers have infiltrated, but are they Chinese?

FBI’s doing one hell of a job. But never mind Chinese hackers. Those pro-lifers praying in front of abortion charnel houses...THOSE PEOPLE are the threats to America. Throw them all in jail for 20 years!

The advance notice is to set the narrative ahead of the attack.

Can’t have the public getting the wrong idea....
