FR Folding@Home Project Update - We're in the Top 150 teams Worldwide! (A Tribute to Ronald Reagan)
Stanford University Mathematics Department ^ | 03/20/2006 | Many Volunteers

OK, new thread for the next week, celebrating the first of many Million point producers – our very own Klutz_Dohanger!

First, a big shout out to the SETI and BOINC members who have added CPUs to the effort. Remember, its Team 36120, NOT Team 0.

Next, congrats to all for bumping our team up to 1011 processors and 305 user names. We have a number of new users in the team, with over 50 computers from GetLoaded.com, a trucking support website, all contributing while their owners ply our freeways keeping the nation moving.

We now have 57 members who have contributed at least 10,000 points each. Woo-Hoo!

Even more impressive, our team now boasts 225 members who have folded at least 1,000 points. That is more than the entire number of folders for our erstwhile left-wing environazi competitors!

Free Republic Folding@Home Stats Page

On the global front, Free Republic Folders is now listed at # 157. We will be in the Top 150 on Saturday!

As we continue to grow there are a number of milestones coming around the bend:

Top 150 by March 30
Top 100 by the end of the May

We have 3,350,000 points so far and have folded over 20,000 WU. We now fold over a million points per month, each and every month! Fantastic!

Thanks again to all that are helping us advance science and promote the peaceful use of computers.

Even if they all have the same username, it will still be reflected in the # of CPUs, but not the # of users. I have 4 CPUs folding for me under my 1 username. Klutz has about a gazillion....

OK Egon, I got back in town, and downloaded the script, edited it to my username, etc. and double-clicked on it from Windows Explorer. I didn't get anything popping up from a firewall, but I don't see my username on the FAH monitoring list yet. What am I doing wrong?

It's quite possible you're slouching in your chair. That always has a negative effect.

Can you email the .vbs file to me? I'll Freepmail the address to you...

Pretty much everyone uses their one username for all their own computers. It's easier to keep track of points, and stay competitive within the team that way. We don't lose anything by doing it that way. As Bush_Democrat pointed out, they get counted in the total CPU count, which is the most accurate indicator of a team's power.

Either way, we're happy to have your two CPUs :)

I like the new CPU column on the main page, and the summary at the bottom :)

Thanks for your help, Egon. You're a genius!

FWIW, if anyone has a similar problem that I had, I had put my username into the overclocking.com username field in the script, instead of the 6 digit number that it needed. Once I fixed that, I was good to go! It's a nifty little thing Egon has created, I highly recommend it to everyone. (see post #28)

Heh, yeah! I bet you do, since you own about 20% of the total!

Thanks! Still experimenting around...

Oh, the horror. Just as I reached the modest 25th WU marker, I find myself staring down the barrel of a P2107 Lambda!

500/10,000 frames completed!

At least it's moving somewhat quickly. My estimate is one day, 3 hours remaining.

Egon, I'm starting to experience a "Core download error" on one of my machines. I seem to remember you had this problem at one time. I've uninstalled and reinstalled F@H, but to no avail. Any hints?

Mine happened on three of my processors almost simultaneously. After completing a project, and uploading the results, the newly downloaded project wouldn't work. At the end of the log, it said that since this had happened 5 times in a row, the FAH process was going to "sleep" for 24 hours, and then awaken.

During this sleep process, the status file continued to be written to (at 100%), so none of the machines turned red.

I tried shutting down and restarting the process, but to no avail. After 24 hours those processors started folding like nothing had ever happened.

I have not a clue what the problem was.

Hey, Egon, would you ask your brother if there is any way to configure the Linux FAHconsole to use more memory?

Came across this...

To: Egon; All

Thanks for the info.

I discovered that the Linux version, MEPIS, is already using most of the physical memory with about 27% of it as a disk cache, leaving about 16% free. With nothing else running, it's not using any swap file (virtual memory), LOL.

I sure would like to speed up that system, but I'm not sure how to do it. It's an off-brand box, X-Systems, using an FIC SD11 motherboard, 512 MB PC100 memory, & AMD K7 Thunderbird 500 Mhz CPU. I know it can be overclocked, but I'm not sure how or what to tweak. I don't use this system for anything but FAH, and it seems to be pretty slow compared to some of the like systems other FReepers are running.

If, anyone has any ideas, let me know.
Thanks,
RT

Speaking of your brother, how's he doing on the Linux version of your monitor?

If you need a beta tester, let me know. (I hope it's an executable, I don't know Linux very well and have never compiled a program or kernel or whatever you call it, LOL.)

It's actually complete. I'm in the process (between pesky real-life work) of genericizing it (is that a word), and coming up with a list of requirements and instructions.

Unfortunately, Linux doesn't come with a built-in scripting language powerful enough to handle what I need, so we had a choice of PHP or Perl. My brother chose PHP because it's more likely to be part of the wider install base and, where it isn't, requires less additional modules/customizations to implement.

As it is, he's come up with the following list of prerequisite modules:

I may be mangling these requirements, so go by the help file as gospel, not the above list.

I'll be working on tweaking the script, and updating the help page this evening.

genericizing ???  -  ROTFLOL  - hey, when you work for free and do neat things like you do, then, you can make up any word you want, heheh.

huh?  -  sorry, that's all Greek to me.  I'll need step-by-step if possible.  I don't even know where to look to see if I have those things.  My install is a standard install for MEPIS 3.3.1

Ping me when you're done with the script.  I hope you can tell me how to find out if I have the minimum requirements.

Thanks for all your hard work, and your brother's hard work, too.

I'm not sure there is much you can do. CPU speed is what folding is all about and the so called optimizing tricks will produce next to nothing, IMHO. Yes, you can overclock if you enjoy that type of hobby, but at the end of the day it will be difficult to tweak this old of a system and get better results.

Suggest you leave it alone and just enjoy what points you get out of it.

"Suggest you leave it alone and just enjoy what points you get out of it."

LOL - yeah, that's what I've been doing.  It just sits there with the monitor turned off, quietly folding away, CPU at 100% all the time.

I won't mess with it without some good info (on OC tweaking, that is).  I don't really have the time to do it, anyway.  (Too much laundry to do, heheh.)

This folding stuff really is addictive, though.  I keep wanting to add more CPUs and climb the stats, then I take a look at yours and Klutz's stats and I know I could never get close, LOL.  But, I'll keep on folding - the scientific potential is just too great to not do it.

So, how are you doing?  Any system lockups or bad boys?  I hope they're all behaving.  I noticed that Klutz has a couple that may be offline.  Are you going to run Egon's script so we can all see your system's progress, as well?  His server status page is showing 13 users (Freepers) & 115 CPUs, (50 of those are Klutz's, lol).

Happy folding.

Are you going to run Egon's script

Probably not...I've only got three CPUs folding. I've got a 4th box with a old CPU that needs configuring but I've got to learn more Linux, and I've got my firewall so tight I can't get out on my DSL. Time is limited and like most of us, I dream of a bigger, badder folding system, but never seem to find the time to make it so.
