Probably so. Admiral Byrd was an arctic and antarctic explorer, and there isn't room for a lot of nonsense in that profession.

And the fact that he ran into Germans makes the whole thing sound like a postwar PR piece for the Thule Society; there's also a second Third Reich era hollow Earth model in which we're living there -- that the supposedly convex spheroid of Earth is actually concave, and beneath our feet there's rock out to infinity. This was supposedly tested by the Nazis -- an expedition was sent to, hmm, some tiny flyspeck island in the Arctic. German radar equipment was set up and beamed a signal into the sky, the hypothesis being, if the reverse hollow Earth idea were true, the convoys to Britain could be detected at great distance (essentially, across the inside of the sphere).

It's garbage. The NAZIs moved their entire UFO production facility to Antarctica before the war, although there were still a few Hegelian monists who were not convinced that appearances are deceiving and the world might well be inverted from the way it looks.
