What the hell is "CE"?

I know "BC" and "AD", but no "CE"!

CE is Christian Era, as opposed to BC -- Before Christ.

C.E. is Common (or Christian, depending on the scholar) era, B.C.E. is Before Common (or, again, Christian) Era.

A little balm for non-Christian scholars, makes it easier for everyone to get passed the non-issues and talk about actual scholarship.
