Well, for one thing, there's no sound when it does (at least, not from the viewpoint of another planet or a spacecraft) -- unlike what we're used to in sci-fi shows...

TVF attempts to answer this in a few different ways, but that's always been a problem for the model. He's convinced because of the good fit between observations and his model (the ten things above, etc). Comet focusing is also explained by one version (Matese') of planet X (that is, an unknown, large planet is out past Neptune, kickin' the comets into the inner solar system). My view is that there are a series of explanations for each of these observations, although I don't necessarily reject the idea of exploding bodies.
