Anti-Mormons Attacks Must Stop, FR is Better Than That (Vanity)
December 12 2007 | jveritas

Dear FRiends

It really pains me to see some of those vicious anti-Mormons attacks we see on Free Republic disguised under the “freedom of speech. Attacking people based on their Mormon faith is really disgusting and it is an insult to this great forum. People who do not like Governor Mitt Romney based on his positions are free to express their opinion as such, but people who attack him because he is a Mormom should be ashamed of themselves and must not be allowed to do so.

I greatly hope that Free Republic members and moderators will get together and help in stopping this anti-Mormon vitriol, this great Free Republic must not be tainted by these shameless acts.

Your numbers don’t add up.

Scientologist 45,000 inside the US.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints reports 6,700,000 inside of the US.

We are used to being hated. I don’t hate you for hating us though. I just think you are misguided.

Matthew 5:9.

Mormons have long been among the most stalwart supporters of conservative presidential candidates to be found. They were George W. Bush's strongest supporters in both elections.

Many older FReepers will recall that at the opening ceremony for President Reagan's first inauguration he specially requested that the Mormon Tabernacle Choir sing "God Bless America." He later recorded in his memoirs, "I've never been filled with such a surge of patriotism. It was so hard not to cry during the whole thing. That choir, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, singing 'God Bless America.' Well, it was cold, but it was so moving, I was crying frozen tears."

My sister-in-law and her husband sang in the Choir for that inaugural. Her husband has since passed on. But they both were so thrilled to sing for President Reagan, to show him and rest of America how deeply they loved this great nation and loved God. My sister-in-law still weeps when she recalls that day.

God bless America. God bless FR.

Let’s forget this inarticulate, ungrammatical ass attacking all of us for allegedly attacking anti-Mormonism, and let us all move now to the fun Bikini Flap thread!

I don’t know enough about Mormonism to be for or against it. If Mitt turns out to be one of the finalists in all this, I guess I’ll have to find out more.

For many (all too many) discussion of their own religious beliefs by those "not of the fold" is considered bashing, out of place, and very nearly heresy ~ making it not fit reading matter for the faithful.

Frankly I reject that belief since it cannot be differentiated from institutionalized religious bigotry.

Moslems think it's OK to murder people who disagree with them over religion. They also believe it proper to silence them (short of murder).

Let's not get into adopting Moslem political and theological morality in this discussion of what it means to be super filthy rich running for President and belonging to a church that doesn't use the Nicene Creed.

Southern Baptists, especially those Missouri Synod jerks

You do know that the Missouri Synod is a branch of the Lutheran Church?

Please don’t take this the wrong way but I am royally PO’d about what Huckster(the supposed nice guy) said and the too many apologists for him on FR that would cloke their dislike for Romney in their religious disagreements with Mormonism. This is a public forum and I don’t much care who you were directing your comments. You don’t like Romney? Fine. You don’t agree with Mormonism? Fine. Don’t mix the two as Huckster did. Not unless you can prove a unique connection between his Mormonism and his public policy.

I think it was Sam Johnson who criticized the early Methodists as people who slaughtered young children and drank their blood.

Could Sam have been having a precognitive vision of Hillary? Just kidding.

I’m like everybody else on here. Where are these mysterious posts. I for one don’t want to see censoring on debate on FR. It is perfectly ok to call a spade a spade. Its perfectly ok to say you don’t agree with the tenent of any religion. To try to limit discussion on this is just wrong. We don’t need to go politically correct here on FR.
Since no one else wants to say it I guess I will. I will not vote for Mitt Romney because he is a Mormon. Having said that I have found that most of the Mormons I have meet are really good people. On the whole they are more devout than most Christians I know. They practice what they preach and thats really admirable. But I’m sorry, Mormons are not Christians, and I’m one of those evangelicals that wants a Christian in the White House.
If this is considered an attack on Mormons then so be it. I just think it’s an honest opinion.

jveritas is 100% right. Any and all anti-Mormon attacks on Free Republic must stop or be pulled by the admin moderators.

FR rules should be imposed for repeat offenders.

IMO, as far as candidates for office go, doctrinal debates are appropriate in any context where doctrine could directly influence political policy. From the small sample of relevant threads (Romney and Huckabee threads mostly) I have viewed, such arguments mostly seem to be in bad faith (that was inadvertent!); less about doctrine and policy impact, and more about wielding ignorance as a weapon to score points against other candidates (instead of directly arguing against the real offending policy disagreement).

Though of course some of us in the grassroots have sincere concerns about religious doctrine as it relates to political candidates, one would have to be seriously deluded to think that the related sparring on TV has anything to do with doctrine. From Huckabee getting in his childish jabs at Romney and Thompson, to Pat Robertson endorsing Giuliani, the people we project a lot of our own motivations into are really solely motivated by attaining office or gaining power - almost all of their concerns are certainly profane. Flame suit on, but I wouldn't be shocked to learn that a great deal of the religiosity across all parties is artificial anyway.

Throwing fellow followers of Christ under the bus:

Walking across a bridge, I saw a man on the edge, about to jump. I ran over and said: “Stop. Don’t do it.”

“Why not?” he asked.

“Well, there’s so much to live for!”

“Like what?”

“Are you religious?”

He said: “Yes.”

I said: “Me too. Are you a Christian?”

“Yes.”

“Me, too. Are you Catholic or Protestant?”

“Protestant.”

“Me, too. Are you Episcopalian or Baptist?”

“Baptist.”

“Me, too. Are you Baptist Church of God or Church of the Lord?”

“Baptist Church of God.”

“Me, too. Are you original Baptist Church of God, or Reformed Baptist Church of God?”

“Reformed Baptist Church of God.”

“Me, too! Are you Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1879, or Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1915?

He said: “Reformation of 1915.”

I said: “Die, heretic scum,” and pushed him off.

One man's bigotry is another man's sacred doctrine.

Might we not criticize the Mormons for referring to fellow Christians as "Gentiles"?

I haven’t seen any Mormon bashing threads either.

That said, even though I’m a Methodist (in name only currently) I deeply respect the resolute faith the Mormons place in their religion and their traditions. If we non-Mormons worked half as hard at trying to spread the gospel as we know it, and lived for family as they do, the world would be a better place.

I realize that some faiths just simply cannot accept what people of other faith’s believe. I think that’s OK. We all have a judgement day and whatever faith you may be part of, I would hope that you can stand before your maker knowing that you’ve led your life as a believer of your faith rather than a disbeliever of another.

That’s a beautiful story, thanks for sharing.

I see Mormonism as a distinctly American religion, which is unique in scope. Personally, the Mormons that I have known in my life have been very good, decent, hard-working people who showed no bigotry towards me, a Roman Catholic, whatsoever. They have also shown themselves to be some of the most conservative people I’ve ever known.

You are right, i was confusing this argument with one I was in the other day, which claimed that many Christians were not Trinitarians, which is definitely not true.

I simply wanted an example of what the originator of this thread called a vicious anti-Mormon attack.

Some here have a very fluid, lax and flexible definition for the word attack.

As far as my feelings about Romney and Mormonism, you have no idea what you're talking about.....and it's gonna stay that way.
