And the flip side is that space-travelling beings could be so far evolved above us that we would not perceive their nature, just as a bacterium in our gut does not grasp the nature of the being that they inhabit.
The premise of “Star Trek: First Contact” is about, yes, the first contact we made with extra-terrestrial life. It’s set around 2060.
Our section of the galaxy is inhabited by the Vulcans, a more advanced people than we are. Basically, they’re running around the galaxy but don’t interfere, at all, with civilizations which haven’t learned to travel at warp speed. For better or worse, we’re on our own and they’re not even telling us that they are there.
At the point where we are able to travel faster than light, they finally come down and introduce themselves and welcome us to the club.
I hope that’s the case. It’s depressing to think we’re destined to self-destruct or even that there’s nothing else out there.
