A better term than “Falsify” would be, perhaps, invalidate.

Perhaps.

But in science, hypotheses and theories are tested by attempting to "falsify" them by experiment. In cosmology, experiments are a little difficult and a lot expensive, such as the Deep Impact mission of a couple of years ago that falsified a whole host of predictions on the nature of comets which were based on the accepted cosmology... but finding observations that show a prediction false comes close. It does not mean that those finding the data that falsifies the hypotheses or theories false are calling the proponents of those hypotheses or theories liars (unless, of course, they find them faking data), it merely means the hypothesis or theory is a fallacy and it's back to the chalk board to find a better hypothesis or theory.
