So, we are half-way to visiting all of the states in the union.”
For you, my Rio Linda-dwelling friend, that means you need to post a transcript of his program and not a video of Obama's comment.
To make a complete list of jurisdictions we would also have to make reference to all the recognized and sovereign tribes of Native Americans, some of which carry out certain quasi-state functions such as issue titles for motor vehicles.
I ain’t got a dog in this feud between you two but I do have the transcript.. for what it’s worth:

But say it did come from 57 Islamic states, or Heinz 57 varieties, or Interstate 57 (which runs from Chicago down to Cairo) or Passenger 57 (the Wesley Snipes movie), or Psalm 57, or "57 Channels (and Nothin' On)," or West 57th Street, or 57, the country code for Colombia, what does it possibly matter?
It may be a funny coincidence, but is it really anything more than that?

The whole quote shows what a dummy he is. First he says he’s been to 57 states, then says he has one more to go to. Then says that his security detail hasn’t let him go to HI or AK, which is two states not one. What a maroon.
I don't think he believes there are 60 states. Listening to the audio, I think that by the time he computed the number of states, he'd forgotten that his previous word was "fifty" instead of "forty".
He starts to say 50 states. Then realizes he hasn't actually been to all 50. So let's see, how many has he been to. Well, taking the 48 continental states minus one left to go, that's 47. So he says the "seven", having forgotten that his previous word wasn't "forty". So the correct tally would be 47 of the lower 48 states, which is to say all but one of the states other than Alaska and Hawaii.
This isn’t 1964 when we counted the 48 + the 2 new ones. If that’s their story, it’s a thin reed.
BTW I think the 57 Islamic states makes much more sense coming from Hussein.

He clearly had meant to say that he had campaigned in 47 states, since he followed up saying that he still had three more states to visit.
It was a stupid gaffe — nothing more.
If Bush had said the same thing, the leftists would have been all over it. Obama continues to have the same types of gaffes that make the left call Bush an idiot.
