I would never eat a wild mushroom. Not ever. Here in the Pacific Northwest, there is quite a bunch of folks who do collect them. They even sometimes end up shooting at each other over some of the more exotic kinds!

But every year you hear about somebodies liver getting turned to goo.

Many years ago (mid 70’s) here in central CA an indian woman and her 4 kids went picking wild mushrooms in the foothills. They all suffered liver failure, 2 died, and one ended up with a liver transplant.

My dad says his mother would cook wild mushrooms with a silver dollar in olive oil and a cast iron skillet. If the silver dollar turned black, she would throw them out. I would never try such a stunt nowadays and would never advise anyone to try it.

We have large numbers of wild mustard greens around our house.

Around here, you have to watch out for the cow pattie mushrooms as well. Might take that trip without leaving the farm, if you get a psilocybin or psychodelic mushroom. They won’t kill you, but you could be found later naked on the water tower, singing.

The one time I went on a wild food outing, we ate chicken of the woods, which is a poisonous mushroom. The guide had to leach it in water for several iterations to get the acid out of it. Similar to leaching acorns. It had almost no taste, but it did have the consistency of chicken. The mushroom people know about these things. It is all dangerous unless you have prior knowledge of what is safe. I was not real keen on eating a leached mushroom. I suppose it is useful information for survival purposes.
