It’s all designed to increasingly put the population on edge ... resist the urge.

Perhaps they expect the satellites involved to malfunction or come to the end of their useful life before they can be fixed or replaced, and they figure that if they cut off the info now, the exact timing and existence of the problem won't be revealed by a sudden cessation of the info in the future.

Remember the movie Armageddon, where the NASA and the government kept hush that the world could be destroyed, and get with Harry (Bruce Willis) like 16 days before the possbile end of all humanity? *rollseyes*

Ironic, huh?

I think this has to do with N. Korea’s recent nuclear bomb testing.

Publishing information that the satellite observes can reveal much about the satellite’s location and its ability.

I guess I can agree with this new policy given what they say the scientists glean from the data. After all, we’ve ceded the high ground for the foreseeable future and the last thing we need are space rocks raining down from China Moon. /semiserious

The upshot: Space rocks that explode in the atmosphere are now classified. "It's baffling to us why this would suddenly change," said one scientist familiar with the work. "It's unfortunate because there was this great synergy...a very good cooperative arrangement. Systems were put into dual-use mode where a lot of science was getting done that couldn't be done any other way. It's a regrettable change in policy." ... "The fireball data from military or surveillance assets have been of critical importance for assessing the impact hazard," said David Morrison, a Near Earth Object (NEO) scientist at NASA's Ames Research Center. He noted that his views are his own, not as a NASA spokesperson.
And still 78 per cent of scientists voted for Obama. /sarc
