Something like the events descried in the “Canticle” did happen - in Red China during the Cultural Revolution but even more so during the “Year Zero” of the Khmer Rouge which killed people for wearing glasses because it was a sign they were readers of books.

That author committed suicide and put the church in the position of continuing caretaker of human technology. It is a dismal way to view the church and not very realistic.
