The red giant Betelguese is supposed to go nova any time
in the next 1000 years. It would be visible to the naked eye
during the day. this sounds like a dead satellite.
I don’t think we’ll know for sure unless some fragment can be found.

It already has - the intense X-ray and Gamma-ray bursts will reach Earth on the afternoon of Dec 23, 2012 - the light will be visible shortly afrerwards for the cockraoches to see.
