Astronomy experts are appealing for witnesses to an extremely rare fireball believed to have blazed across the morning sky.

The spectacular sight, which star-gazers claim happened just before dawn on Monday, is being attributed to a massive meteor shower currently taking place over the northern hemisphere.

"The fireball is really very special and unusual," Astronomy Ireland chairman David Moore said.

MEANWHILE FROM NEBRASKA:

CURIOUS EVENTS IN NEBRASKA: “Last night, Dec. 16th at 9 p.m. CST, a very bright meteor lit up the completely overcast sky like lightning in southeast Nebraska,” reports Trooper Jerry Chab of the Nebraska State Patrol. “It flashed for approximately 2 seconds and was followed by sonic booms and ground shaking, which prompted many calls by the public to law enforcement in a three county wide area.” Meanwhile, the USGS says there was a magnitude 3.5 earthquake near Auburn, Nebraska, at 8:53 pm, about the same time and place as the fireball.

Now I know I’m not going crazy. The past week I’ve been going out at night just to see shooting stars... I’ve been seeing several a night now. Now I know it’s from this meteor shower.

Oh yeah that’s what is was, those darn mis-fired missles again...!

Anyone for some Arctic roll? Mystery as spiral blue light display hovers above Norway

Then a green-blue beam of light shot out from its centre - lasting for ten to 12 minutes before disappearing completely.

Onlookers describing it as ‘like a big fireball that went around, with a great light around it’ and ‘a shooting star that spun around and around’.

I have not seen any fireballs, but I do notice many twinkling stars that look miscombobulated (sp?) in the night sky, looks beautiful and weird at the same time..

I think more the latter than the former, but I agree.

I’m surprised they didn’t know about that picture already.

I can’t figure out where the Google article is referring to - all I see is “Northern Hemisphere”.
