A Look Back: October 17, 1989 "She vividly remembered the terrible smell of the smoke from the burning city and how she and her family had to live in a tent in the Presidio," Legge said. WHAT!!! No FEMA trailer? No $500 FEMA gift cards. No free government food, housing, shelter for years after the earthquake????
How did people make it???

My Grandfather was 6 years old in the S.F. train station for the earth quake. He said all he could remember was the fires and smoke. He was stuck there for days, but got out. He died at 87 in ‘87. Smoked 4 packs of cigarettes most of his addult life, so guess he got used to the smoke after a while. I am sure I never smoked because he was the messiest smoker that ever lived.
