Against my better judgment I've been sparring with some alarmists on another forum. When their glib Algore-like points are refuted they react as you suggest. They remind me of children who plug their ears, close their eyes, stamp their feet and say over and over again, "consensus"!

OTOH, I've been pleasantly surprised by how many articulate skeptics I've run across.
