The waves hit a point of land, and if there's still enough water they propagate in concentric rings from that point.

The people living on Penang had part of the Indonesian tsunami hit their beaches even though they weren't in a direct line from the point source. We know a guy who stood on his porch watching it come in (he lived up a hill. Some people died there.)

The Western Mediterranean will be WRACKED with tsunami waves for hours, and that will include Spain, France, Italy, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, and possibly even Egypt ~ just like Penang got hit.
