whoa. freaky. I’ve seen smaller sized hail than that do quite a bit of damage. I can only imagine what cars caught in that look like.

Born and raised in Rapid City. I remember hail storms that would literally destroy B-52s at Ellsworth AFB when I was a kid. (They didn’t have enough hangars for all of them...)
The car dealers loved the storms - that way the insurance would buy all of the cars.
Severe thunderstorms are a daily occurrence at this time of year there, but the hailstones shown on your link are huge - even by South Dakota standards..

About 1993 I was caught in a hail storm in Dallas.
Chunks of ice the size of bricks were falling. Luckily, the ice chunks were somewhat soft, or I would have had to replace front and back auto windows.

That's more like bowling ball size hail.
I wonder if this is the same storm that forced a plane to land in Colorado due to injuries on board caused by extreme turbulence? I think it was the same day.

It fell in Vivian, SD on July 23. Had some earlier that same day at our house, but it was pretty soft, so didn’t do much damage. We’ve had some pretty bad hailstorms here and have had to replace our roof four times, but nothing THAT size.

Just got back from downtown SD and nothing.
