That’s rich, coming as it does from the atheist and socialist Mark Twain.

One would think he might have had more sympathy for the scientific community® eh? Be that as it may, from some accounts he experienced an awakening in his later years and softened his criticism of The Almighty. And for that matter, maybe his progressive political tendencies as well. Dunno about that.

In any case, it's easy enough to be cynical towards God because of our lack of understanding of His MO. Been there, done that myself in an earlier life. Maybe ol' Sam knew enough of God to realize He would not smite the old reprobate for his blasphemy. After all, the planet would have very few inhabitants were He to raise His hand to every non-believer. Word would soon get around and leave the remaining occupants with no choice but to believe. NOT God's plan IMHO and generally not His style. But whadda I know???

It’s funny though, because I don’t recall posting this in the Religion forum here, nor did I put “religion” in the keywords, nor did I ping the stalkers (in which category I don’t place you :’). And yet, they’ve been popping up on the GGG topics all night. And Religion forum topics have “science” in their keywords, which such topics should not have. It’s part of the escalating fetish practices here on FR. Either they blow over, or they blow up.

“But who prays for Satan? Who, in eighteen centuries, has had the common humanity to pray for the one sinner that needed it most?” — Mark Twain

“It ain’t those parts of the Bible that I can’t understand that bother me, it is the parts that I do understand.” — Mark Twain

“The Christian’s Bible is a drug store. Its contents remain the same, but the medical practice changes.” — Mark Twain

“Often it does seem a pity that Noah and his party did not miss the boat.” — Mark Twain

“Man was made at the end of the week’s work when God was tired.” — Mark Twain

“Martyrdom covers a multitude of sins.” — Mark Twain

“Loyalty to petrified opinion never yet broke a chain or freed a human soul.” — Mark Twain

“Under certain circumstances, profanity provides a relief denied even to prayer.” — Mark Twain
