AKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Last week at this time, we wondered if the Red Sox [team stats] had a pulse. Now they are terrorizing baseball.

Concluding one of the most stunning weeks in team history, the Sox late last night agreed to a contract with free agent outfielder Carl Crawford, according to a source with knowledge of the discussions.

The deal is for seven years and $142 million. It was first reported by the Globe.

Unless he is 3 WR for Brady, I am not sure where this is important.

Last I checked, the Red Sox play baseball.

This is a big move. The Sox have had an impressive offseason thus far. Up next: Lee to the Yankees.

>>Last I checked, the Red Sox play baseball.<<

They should recruit Brady as pitcher...

and what is this “baseball” of which you speak?

Lifelong Sox fan and a 30 year SF Giants fan. I’d love to see the Giant’s pitching versus the Bosox bats in the 2011 WS....

Great, now we have to suffer yet another sullen, overpaid, past-his-prime veteran shuffling around Fenway Park in the years to come (when he's not on the injury list). Forget the $7.50 hot dog, now it's going to be the $9 hot dog and $12.50 watered down beer to help pay for it all.

Next time the Red Sox want to throw $150 million at some free agent, why don't they just invest it in their farm teams so they can develop some YOUNG talent?

Seriously, the Red Sox would do better to just cut all their older players loose and just fill the lineup with their best Triple A players. You would get a much more entertaining game as you'll have young kids who actually care about playing a good game and playing hard so they can make a name for themselves. Also, regular people might actually be able to afford to go to the games again.

"Forget the $7.50 hot dog..."

Never eat 'em - I fill up on those glorious sausage grinders while sitting on the curb outside of Fenway amongst the vibrating throng of Red Sox Nation..........

They ought to rename the American League East the AL ‘Northeast’...the best baseball money can buy.

Dunno... from The Herald:
“Opposing managers are now going to be lamenting a Red Sox lineup that boasts Gonzalez, Crawford, Kevin Youkilis, Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz, Jacoby Ellsbury and J.D. Drew.”

Crawford is mid-career and in his prime. Having Drew as the weakest guy in that group is not bad. If that line up stays healthy you can look forward another “duck parade” across the Chaaahles to SOXtober 2011.

Crawford is 28. At the end of this deal he may be slightly past his prime.

"...the best baseball money can buy."

I wish they had a salary cap like the NFL, but they don't, so you play to win using the rules as they are - not how you wish they were.
Boston is not really even a big-market team (as U.S. cities go, Boston is way down on the size list), yet consitently field winning teams in every sport - it's the mojo of the fan-base that really counts....

I don’t really follow sports, but it always brings me a bit of good cheer when a New England team misses the playoffs...

While I don’t disagree with your general thoughts, Crawford is a great pickup. My only question is his health. If he stays healthy he will have a significant impact on that lineup. A guy with his speed changes the game for an opposing pitcher. I am in no way a RedSox fan. This move is a great one.

What a week!

The signing of Gonzalez, the Pats destruction of blowhard Rex and his self proclaimed super bowl champion Jets and the signing of Crawford.

Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

Great news, but seven years for $142 million?? Wow.

And Adrian Gonzalez as well... could be an interesting year for the Red Sox if Beckett, sLackey and Dice-K get their acts together.

Any news if the Red Sox are keeping Adrian Beltre?

Supposedly no room for Beltre now that we have Gonzales

The Crawford salary, about $20 mil./yr, is about what the Sox paid for Manny for 8 years...and that was 10 yrs ago. $20 mil/yr isn’t so shocking anymore comp. with other salaries
these days. Though I hear he will be about the 6th or 7th highest paid player...and the highest paid among outfielders
