This is one reason I love astronomy. It’s not a locked up science so amateurs can still make discoveries, and in their own back yards.

We talk about the scopes we have now in our local astronomy club and compare them to what the giants of astronomy had back 100 years ago. Those guys would have killed to have some of these things. Even today, the equipment that amateurs have is better than most of the scopes the Pros get to use. Only the really advanced Pros get to use the big stuff and their time is limited. We amateurs are only limited by our free time.
I hear that there is a guy that goes to Oke-Tex that has a 36 inch Dob that he brings out. Just for personal use!
The BBC seems to think that “found” and “discovered” are synonyms. That’s not quite true.
