Why didn’t the cut out the prints and preserve them with liquid plastic? Plaster casts would have been nice, maybe.

We did that in Boy Scouts back in the 60’s, we made a plaster mold of dinosaur tracks in Glen Rose Texas, one of the more creative in our group did a cast of the casting which appears like an original, really neat.
