I'm not sure who all is familiar with the New Madrid fault, as it can cause earthquakes in parts of the US not commonly known for them. That, and (unlike California) there are still a lot of good patriotic conservative God fearing folk that could be affected by a major quake in this region. I don't know what the building codes around these parts specify, but I'm guessing that many of the structures wouldn't survive a Japan-style event.

” I’m not sure who all is familiar with the New Madrid fault,..”

Military engineering friends are already tasked with
responding to a New Madrid earthquake .
Not anything new, the New Madrid fault and other potential disasters have been part of their preparedness training for years.
But, it’s something engineers and geologists take seriously.
NatGeo or Discovery had a special on the New Madrid awhile back.
The geographical evidence still exists .
The church bells ringing in New York and Boston during the quake , as well as the written stories from the local residents at the time ,
was a fascinating anecdotal detail.
I’ve never asked my buddies about Yellowstone’s seismic activity and the potential for a super volcanic eruption ,
maybe that situation would be so catastrophic that preparations would be pointless.

The lack of rock, compared to California, is supposed to make a quake in this region much more severe and widespread in its effects than a similar intensity quake in California.

Well I am in one of the outer rings.. we know there is a fault in our area

I have carried earthquake insurance for a very long time now..

It has low cost if you are not in California ...

Just saying

I saw an interesting documentary on New Madrid over the weekend (funny how these all get resuscitated at such times)....it's close to concensus that this fault pretty much "died" during that 1811-1812 series.

Shudders, if not - having visited tons throughout that part of the country, people do NOT secure stuff like we do here in California. Those chair rails full of doo-dads would become flying projectiles from every which way.
