In a post last month, I noted that Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s patience with Obama’s dithering over the Keystone Pipeline in order to pander to the rainbow and unicorn crowd that forms his political base wouldn’t last forever. Harper, I wrote, fully understands what motivates Obama, and it’s not sound energy policy:

I hope that the Canadians and the Chinese come to an agreement on this. They would really stick it to the lowlife Kenyan and his Marxist environmentalist pals. The jerks living in this country are never going to figure it out until they are paying 25 bucks a gallon for gasoline. Then again, they may never figure it out. About 50% of the people living in this country aren’t very bright although they do have college diplomas and single digit I.Q.s.

No, Harper is doing the right thing by taking care of his country’s needs first and foremost. That is his job.
It doesn’t mean that my country won’t sell oil to you guys, if by February, 2012, Obama finally gives approval to the Keystone pipeline.
But Canada, like every other country in the world, shouldn’t have to put it’s economic future on hold while another country (any country) plays politics with itself before coming to a decision.
I’d feel the same, if it were the other way. If America had a product to sell Canada and the Canadian political parties were playing politics amongst themselves. I wouldn’t blame the US for not putting any part of its economic future on hold while waiting for Canada to work it out.
At some point, a decision has to be made.
Just watch: soon we’ll be buying oil from China...that was purchased from Canada, shipped to China, refined, shipped back to the U.S., that Canada originally wanted to sell us.
I’ll rate that a 7/10 as far as methods to destroy this nation go.

That was my first thought. I envisioned thousands of citizens surrounding the white house and mall demanding he leave office to save our country. Tens of thousands.

I'm pretty sure Harper won't fly home with a sealed deal, but, hey, this is what negotiations look like.
No reason he should play the Canadian supplicant and roll over and wait, either.
