Jersey City school officials blame parents for low participation in federal breakfast program
Jersey Journal ^ | October 5, 2012

Days after a report by two nonprofits cited Jersey City’s school district as an “underachiever” for not serving free or reduced-price school breakfasts to 82 percent of its eligible students, district officials are placing the blame squarely on parents.

The report, which lauds some Hudson County schools for boosting its participation in the federal school breakfast program, says Jersey City has 21,221 students eligible to participate in the program, yet only 3,880 do. District spokeswoman said school officials alert parents whose children are eligible for free breakfasts, but parents don’t seem interested. The program starts at 8 a.m., 30 minutes before the school day officially begins.

But they have never blamed parents for kids failing in school. Entering school with being able to count etc.

From the article:

“A family of four whose income is about $40,000 – or 185 percent of the federal poverty level – or below is eligible for reduced-price breakfast and lunch, which can be free if the family makes significantly below that threshold.”

***

I know food is expensive, but why can’t the children in a family of four earning $40,000 not be able to eat breakfast at home?

TRANSLATION: When parents feed their own children, nanny-state programs look bad.

Gee, do you think it might have to do with the fact that these parents then have to drive the kids to school so that they can get this free breakfast? So in fact, it isn’t free now is it!

Cost of gas, time of parent, choice? Cheaper to feed the child at home.

Just maybe those Jersey City parents would rather THEY provide breakfast for THEIR kids, NOT some “gov’t. largesse”,
funded by their neighbors’ taxes!

Maybe they are doing the “responsible” thing. Ya think??

Some are, no doubt.

...but parents don’t seem interested. The program starts at 8 a.m., 30 minutes before the school day officially begins.

But this little blurb pretty much proves out that deadbeat parents will not go out of their way for their kids, even when it's free. "Wha?? Ya mean, I gotta take Junior to school myself, a whole half-hour early? Shiiii.... he can last a day (or 5) without breakfast!"

Food is cheap. 50 lbs of oatmeal is 18.00. We ate oatmeal daily with fruits, nuts, yougert and various sweetenrs and milk for the children’s entire childhoods.

A few days ago I made a rare early morning run for supplies before the rush hour. This was 6:30 AM and still dark. The streets were flooded with school buses picking up kids from middle class neighborhoods to take to school so they could eat for free.

With over 46 million now on food stamps, maybe everyone is adequately supplied with enough funds to feed their children. /s

Sad commentary on society for berating parents for feeding their own kids in school instead of relying on the “givernment” for their breakfast.

“Feeding their own kids in school” = “feeding their own kids before school”

I would gladly exchange both breakfast and lunch for a chance to sleep extra 30 minutes. As matter of fact, I never ate anything in school, at any time.
