Thanks KoRn. Years ago in "Strange" magazine, Vincent Gaddes wrote a very nice two-parter about vanished islands, some of which apparently existed at one time. My favorite one was a small archipelego (mostly just one island) some hundreds of miles due west from Panama where there simply isn't any land now. But in the context of this article, in the sub-Antarctic waters but of the Indian Ocean, a fishing vessel went ashore on an island that wasn't on their charts and butchered out some whales or something, then went back to sea. They charted the island and no one has seen it since. That's just creepy, because it may have been a big berg that ran aground (it was icy, but had some soil sticking out and that kind of thing), or it may have been a small volcanic island that had a short-lived existence.
