Scranton police say 35-year-old Donald Albritton swiped the ring while his former girlfriend made Thanksgiving dinner and later gave it to his current wife.

How is it theft to take what’s his? If they never got married, isn’t he entitled to get the engagement ring back!

“Investigators say Albritton had gone to his ex’s home to drop off a check and thank her for not involving the police in another matter.”

Well the investigators now apparently know about the other matter ... ha......

Investigators say Albritton had gone to his ex’s home to drop off a check and thank her for not involving the police in another matter. But The Times-Tribune of Scranton reports witnesses claimed they saw him palm the ring before he left.

"palm the ring"? What was this, a Thanksgiving dinner or a mob reunion?

That was my question. It was always proper etiquette to return an engagement ring when the engagement was broken off.

It makes me wonder when and how the engagement was broken. Did he break the engagement by taking the ring? This story needs more facts.

The article is definitely shy on facts, but it does refer to his current wife so the broken engagement, one presumes, perhaps in error, preceded his marriage. These situations are not quite so straightforward as they once were.

What he could have done to warrant the letter of apology he allegedly brought on the day he took the ring thickens the plot. It could be that he owed her and had agreed to let her keep the ring when they broke up. Lotta trash out there, lots.

No, he is not entitled. It was a gift and is rightfully her property. Etiquette (not law) says that she gives it back if she ended the engagement. If he ended it, he not only has no legal right to get it back, she has zero moral or social obligation to return it.

This should be common sense.

The article does not say she broke things off. However, if she broke things off because she found out he was still married, then she doubly deserves to keep the ring.

It’s my understanding that an engagement ring is a conditional gift; the condition to be fulfilled being the marriage. If there is no marriage, the condition is unfulfilled, and the ring, or its monetary value, is returned to the giver. At least that’s how it goes in my state (legally), and I think most states.
