If you had buttonholed me in the Senate men’s room circa 2003 and told me that a decade hence Joe Biden would be America’s vice president, John Kerry secretary of state, and Chuck Hagel secretary of defense, I’d have laughed and waited for the punch line: The Leahy administration? President Lautenberg? Celebrate lack of diversity! But even in the republic’s descent into a Blowhardocracy staffed by a Zombie House of Lords, there are distinctions to be drawn.

Yes, there is a ton of bloat in the military budget. But, that's what you get when you transform it from a fighting force into another form of welfare. There are great people all over the military, but for those on this forum that have served, you all know what an entitlement system it has become.

What enabled Great Britain and so many other European nations to be able to spend their money on social programs and not their defense, was the fact that there were US military bases EVERYWHERE. When you know that the most incredible military machine is going to protect you and it won't cost you a dime, you have the luxury of spending your money on other things.
