I was in south Georgia, it was later reported that the meteor landed in North Carolina.
We had a CB radio in the office, and there was a lot of chatter.

I saw one once too. I was in the 2nd grade in the late 60s and was playing in the back yard on a clear late spring evening chasing lightning bugs with a neighbor friend while my mother was sitting on the back patio keeping an eye on us. All of a sudden the ground lit up like it was daytime. We looked up to see this thing streak right above us and just like you said; it was greenish, actually I recall it was sort of turquoise, with a long sparkly tail and as it passed over, it made a hissing, whistling sound. My older brother was inside the house listening to a Yankees game on the radio and came out to see what happened as hed seen the flash through his bedroom window and thought a transformer exploded. A while later the local radio station broke in with reports the strange sighting. It was a meteorite, probably the size of a baseball or smaller and it supposedly landed about 20 miles away on a small mountain but AFAIK, no one ever found it.
Although it scared me (and my mother) at the time, it was the coolest thing I ever saw.
