Trying to do some web research....came across this very nice paper.

And now know what the H & K project was at Mt Wilson....here in Los Angeles.

Will look for something that lays it out nicely....although this paper does a nice summary.

At last the rubber meets the road! We have described in gruesome detail how we extract the spectra from the raw CCD frames, and how we place the Ca II H&K spectra on an absolute intensity scale. In this article, we describe (in technical terms) how we produce the time series plots of activity in the various stars on our program. The data products of this step are some of the fundamental results that come from our program, revealing the long-term activity changes in the Sun and Sun-like stars.

The H-K Project uses a specially-designed instrument to measure the amount of light from active magnetic regions in stars. This light comes from calcium atoms that have lost one electron each. The different wavelengths of light emitted by these atoms were labeled long ago. The "H" and "K" light gave this project its name. This light comes from the upper levels of the Sun near active magnetic regions that we can see, like sunspots. Other stars are too far away to see these features on their surfaces. Studying the relative strength of these two wavelengths of calcium light from distant stars similar to our Sun gives an indirect measure of the amount of surface activity on the stars -- "starspots". Using this method, astronomers have been able to follow cycles similar to the sunspot cycle that has been observed on the Sun for centuries.

In "The Role of the Sun in Climate Change" the reader finds an entertaining tale told by two scientists. Often in today's debate on global climate change, readers are forced to listen to politicians or the media. This book serves as a refreshing change from that paradigm. Not only is the reader presented with a skeptical view of the facts of global climate change, but the reader may also enjoy the writing style which one rarely finds in writings by scientists. The opening sentence of Chapter 1 sounds like a novel when these scientists describe how one scientist, from an era long gone, went about his daily observing. They even display a sense of humor in their chapters and their titles, as in Chapter 9, "Cyclomania" where they set out to describe many of the different cyclic processes involved in both the sun and climate, and how so many cycles can be used or abused. The variation in solar irradiance is small and the term "solar constant" originated before the time that the small variations in solar irradiance were measurable.

You are incorrect. Al Gore sold Current TV to AL Jazeera which is primarily funded by the Oil Industry. He would not have done that if he knew the entire oil industry was under playing AGW. The author should have stated The EU/US Oil Industry in all its guises. The Arabian Oil Industry wants to promote AGW as a tool to cripple their EU/US competitors. And some of the leftist dupes, have started to get a clue as to how they have been railroaded into the gas chambers. Al Gore's selling of Current TV woke up a couple.
