Vanity: Looking to buy a new Macbook - 11-inch Air or 13-inch Pro?

Basically what the title thread says. I've been looking at these two models to replace my Dell and I'm unsure as to which to get. Any Mac users here that can help out?

What size was your Dell? From experience most people don’t like dropping in screen size, even if the resolution is higher.

Depends on how you are going to use it.
As you get older your vision becomes less accurate and a 13 inch is more appreciated.
But if you're moving around a lot, the lighter weight and smaller package is an advantage.
How do you plan to use it, and how long before you plan to replace it?

I’d go with the largest screen I could afford, and get an I7, not an I5

Can’t help you decide, but I’m running a 15 inch MacBook Pro bought about 4 years ago. Still running Leopard on it. Runs like a champ, I reboot every month or two whether I need to or not.

Unlike a Dell / Win 7 at work which has to be restarted at least once a day, the same as every other Windows machine I’ve ever had. By the time they are 18 months old, the OS just craps out and the apps crashes all the time. No amount of AV, anti-adware, registry cleaning, drive optimization, etc, etc fixes the problems.

Mainly web-surfing, video, and office work. I like the portability of laptops versus desktops.

Buy a small screen Mac Pro (13’’) and then hook up a $159 non-Apple 24’’ monitor. Also, Apple is coming out with new improved models of Macs, which means the current ones will be available at a discount, small one, as is Apple’s custom, but discount nonetheless.

Do you need an internal Optical (CD/dvd) drive? The macbook air has no optical drive.

I'm of two minds.
I'm considering a long hike and the 11 inch would pack light, but if you use a computer a lot, the bigger screen is nice and I would even be considering a 15" Mac Book Pro.
I am currently using a 27 inch i-Mac and I LOVE the large screen.
But it's NOT portable, so I'm considering an iPad for portability, but I'd miss the keyboard.
It really DOES depend on HOW you're going to use it, as to which one to buy.
I don't know if you have friends who have an Apple, but go to a store and try playing with them for a few minutes.
If you have a military friend, have him take you to the Base Exchange and get the sales person to explain the differences and allow you to put your hands on them and play with them for a few minutes.
An Apple store is also an option, but you don't have to buy when you're just looking and learning.
You can buy off the internet just as well and probably cheaper.
Don't forget to checkout the Refurbished & Clearance from Apple, because their warranty is just as good as a new one.

The external monitor is a good alternative when you are at a ‘workstation’. Limitations on HD space is also overcome by using external disk drives — giving you unlimited storage.

The question you need to answer is how much is increased portability worth? MBAir won’t have as fast of CPU processor - won’t have as much memory or HD space. Even your ethernet connection is not a standard jack! But, you get the full utility of the machine - essentially wherever you want to be (and with the new battery times - as long as you want to be there).

The ‘replaced’ machine has a few years on it - so whatever you decide will run circles around the old technology. There are software options that will allow you to ‘do’ the same things as your old machine did - in a more integrated fashion. And, as far as your old files, you can remove the HD from your old machine and have that as an external drive for your new machine (keeping all of your old files handy).

My wife has the 11” Air, and I use it sometimes. I think the screen is too small, so I would highly recommend at least the 13”. But then I use a 27” iMac.

Why not a 13 inch Air? That is what I have and I love it....fast boots with SSD! The new Airs announced Monday get even longer battery life.

One other thing.
Be sure to check out Parallels Desktop for Mac because you can use this program to load your Windows from you old computer onto the Mac and run both Operating Systems off the same Apple.
I love it, and it allows me to continue to use WORD and other programs I'm familiar with, while I go through the learning curve with Mac.
