I can’t see how anyone in Britain could NOT comb their land with a metal detector first chance they got! Heck if I ever get to travel there I may bring my own. ;)

This is not unique (but I've not had any luck so far myself)!
Incidentally, the city of St Albans, mentioned in the article below, was a very important settlement in Roman times so I find it amazing that there isn't a square inch of ground nearby that hasn't been 'sweeped' already more than once!
