First men became enamoured with grooming regimes, but now it seems the metrosexual man has started talking in a more feminine way too.
A new study has revealed that modern men are starting to uptalk by rising in pitch at the ends of sentences.
The speech pattern is associated with young women from southern California, notably Clueless lead character Cher Horowitz, but is now common amongst younger people.

"Welcome to my world."
Recently, I overheard a group of people while at lunch. Two adult women, one adult male and a boy. One woman said she didn’t want any violent gifts for her son such “as swords” because it makes boys turn angry as they age. The other woman said “I saw two boys playing with sticks the other day...I couldn’t believe it. They were hitting each other. You just know they will go to something far more dangerous as they age.” The man didn’t utter a word. He was kept in his place.
Gay men have. Real men are still listening more than they are talking. (And, restraining themselves from eyerolls, or an outright, involuntary backhand to the speakers gob.)
If a guy has a natural-born effeminate voice, how difficult is it for him to change it, if he wants to?
Anyone ever dealt with this issue, either first, second or third hand?
My advice is to try and relax -- seriously. I never realized just how much anxiety and tension kept raised the pitch of my own voice. Once I disciplined myself to relax, especially the muscles controlling my voice box, my voice become a normal man's voice.
What about saying “issues” instead of “problems”? That bugs me.
<< If a guy has a natural-born effeminate voice >>
I think you (and just about all the other commentors on this thread) have missed the point:
It’s not about having an “effeminate voice” or about speaking in a uniformaly high pitch.
Rather, it’s about the Valley Girls’ habit of making most declarative sentences sound like questions, due to rising pitch at the ends of phrases, particularly at the ends of sentences.
In other words, too many young men are now saying things like this:
“We went to Santa Monica today? and we surfed until four o’clock? Then we went back to the Valley? and we sniffed glue until midnight?”
All those phrases sound like questions to us normal people. But for the Valley Girls and their fawning imitators, every one of the phrases is meant to be declarative.
Go figure.
Don’t they sell razors wherever it is that Dingus and Bucket Duck live?
Or is shaving considered “effeminate” in their neck of the woods?
;^)
Jeez.
We used to grab those metal garbage can lids as shields in one hand and wield home made wooden swords in the other and hammer away at each other.
Until the folks saw how banged up the lids were getting and put a stop to it.
<< start 90% of their sentences with Well, I mean ..... >>
Yep. Agreed! And almost as bad as, “Well, to be honest about it . . . .”
(In other words, the speaker is acknowledging that he/she usually isn’t honest!)
AKA Do you kiss your wife with that beard?;p
Thanks for that!
While I do not have a high pitched voice I do wish it was lower and often allow anxiety and tension to accelerate my delivery and in turn affect pitch.
I’m getting better at slowing down...
Just don’t ask me to give up coffee. :)
How about “Founder” and “Flounder?” Ever since “Animal House.” As an old sailor and fisherman, this drives me crazy!
“People who know you and/or love you don’t care really about your lisp. It’s really what you say and how you say things that count, isn’t it?”
Yeth!
(sorry, couldn’t resist. ;) )
One of the girls, suggested that if they were going to keep chripping, they should go outside. The boys had no idea what she was talking about.
I doubt it’s natural-born effeminate, rather a natural-born tenor. You could sing Bach.
It's the mark of maturity to see through adolescence.
As you can see from this thread, speech is a strong socializing factor. People will do anything to identify with a social group for acceptance. You can't really blame them? But to despise them for it? Not if you respect the human person for the potential life they can offer.
Mandrake, have you never wondered why I drink only distilled water, or rainwater, and only pure-grain alcohol?
