Fuel-Efficient Elio Three-Wheel Car Hits 15,000 Orders Before Production Starts

You wouldn't think a small, green, three-wheeled vehicle would be the perfect recipe for creating a buzz in the car world.

But that's what Paul Elio has done with his Elio Motors firm, and though the vehicle in question is still a fair while from production reality, the company has a loyal following already.

So far, it's enough of a buzz that over 15,000 people have put down deposits for the car, according to Elio's website (via Autoblog Green).

That doesn't mean the company has 15,000 sales in the bag, of course.

[…]

It's led Elio to suggest the emissions from driving its cars 20,000 miles per year will produce lower greenhouse gases than the emissions of a cow.

How many times to manufacturers have learn and relearn the lesson that 3 wheeled autos are inherently unsafe.

Big difference when you put the third wheel in the back. Any short wheelbase vehicle is less stable than a longer wheelbase.

I am holding out for one of these.

Hmmm.
Won’t fit the kids, groceries or luggage. Might even have a hard time with the laptop.
Basically useless.

It’s exactly a Can-Am Spyder! All he did is enclose it....

**************************

Not at all , a CanAm Spyder is RWD and is made for fun ,, it has a high powered engine driving the rear wheels and is impractical as an everyday vehicle.

The Elio is simply taking off the shelf small car tech as far as you can to produce a super efficient lowest cost per mile vehicle .. tandem seating results in a small frontal area , the drivetrain is new for this manufacturer but standard FWD stuff , you get A/C , power windows , a stereo , airbags ,,, all you need ... and since a 3 wheeler is a motorcycle you get lower fees for your license plates and in Florida you don't need insurance. I'm buying several for my delivery business.

Oh ,, and it's to be sold as a "sign and drive" no money down where you buy your fuel with an Elio credit card and you get charged 3x the actual fuel purchase ,, with 2x of that going toward the purchase..

Very nice. But I’m not driving in one of those on our highways with cars and trucks going 80.

I’ll believe the price when they arrive at the dealers.

That’s a lot more content at a lower price than Chinese produced motorcycles of similar hp.

Priceless if you need transportation that costs as little as possible ... you can fit one driver and passenger ,, I've been in the front and back seats ... and I'm 5'10" 250# ... there is a separate trunk area also ... to get an idea of the size just think Ford Fiesta at 2/3rds the width and the full length ... This is $6800 ,, a Fiesta starts at $14,500 with similar equipment and half the highway mpg.

We have been looking at them. I think we may order one. I like the Apple Green. You can’t get hurt too bad for $6,800.

At less than 7k I am sure this thing will sell to some folks. Certainly makes more sense than a Smart Car.

Saw a clip of Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear driving a 3 wheeler. A scream.

The Reliant Robin. There was a blue one in the Mr. Bean series that Mr. Bean was always running off the road, and it usually tipped over, too.
