According to Spaceweather.com AR2192 has grown considerably over the past few days and has the potential to unleash M- and X-class flares in our direction now that its moving into Earth-facing position. Its currently many times larger than Earth and will likely get even bigger
in fact, during this weeks partial solar eclipse AR2192 should be visible with the naked (but not unprotected!) eye for viewers across much of North America.

Is the sun about to “moon” us?

Moon spots don’t really “come our way” do they? It’s not like they are a flare that shoots off into space.

Just in time for Hallowe’en.
No seriously, it looks like Al Sharpton crying out for the redemption of his peepul.

A sunspot 'many times larger than Earth' is still akin to comparing a grain of Kosher salt against a basketball.
Call me when the sunspot grows to the size of a Raisin Bran® flake compared to the size of a basketball.

So even a small sunspot like this can’t cause any problems?

I wouldn't be able to anticipate any effects here on Earth from a coronal mass ejection. Maybe you might not be able to receive far-away AM radio stations at night for a little while. That's just a guess.
If there's anything unusual about this sunspot, it's that for quite a long time the Sun has been devoid of sunspot activity.
That we're seeing sunspots again is sort of a return to what we'd long been used to.

I know, right?
I do admit though that for awhile now, I’ve been doing the headless chicken bit through the neighborhood, shouting dire warnings, then retreating to my own property to repaper my home’s exterior with heavy duty aluminum foil...
just for the fun of it.
