Indiana man found dead after attacked by pet pit bull on Christmas Day

An Indiana man was mauled to death by his pet pit bull on Christmas Day, Portage police say.

Edward L. Cahill, 40, was discovered on the living room floor by his girlfriend when she returned from visiting relatives for the holiday. Cahill was unresponsive, NBC Chicago reports.

Authorities were called to a home in the 5500 block of Tulip Avenue at about 8:14 p.m. Cahill was found dead on the floor covered in blood and with multiple lacerations on his face and arms, the Portage police report. A county coroner pronounced Cahill dead at the scene and determined his cause of death was from a dog mauling.

According to Fox Chicago, Cahill's pet pit bull, "Fat Boy," was at fault. Police say the dog was aggressively barking, growling and lunging at officers. A stun gun and an animal control pole was used to get "Fat Boy" under control.

NBC Chicago says the couple raised their dogs since they were puppies, however "Fat Boy" has consistently been aggressive. The dog bit Cahill and his girlfriend's son in the past, the police report adds.

Stay off of my rural property situated behind locked gates and we will never have an issue.

So the only issue you may have is if they happen to come up behind you and see hamburger instead of Master...

"Mine is seven years old and is one of the gentlest of the twenty so dogs I’ve ever owned. Pit Bulls are bred to please. They will do what they are trained to do. If you don’t train them to attack and don’t let them be abused they are as gentle as collies."

Lassie is a most protective breed! I was warned in school many years ago about the bite issues with various dogs while making service calls in peoples homes and yards. The only dog that ever bit me was a scotty that trembled the whole time I was there and bit my calf as I left. I had a homeowner think it was acceptable to have his growling dobie within lunge reach. I told him the dog had to go or I would. I had an attempted assault from a boxer, smacked him down with a heavy screw gun.

Any dog is as unpredictable as any person.

I adopted a pit bull when my kids were young. The previous owner offered to pay for dog training school because the sweet pit bull would lunge at my kids ankles and not want to let go. sweet ha! Well I brought him to dog training school and he was the only one who would growl at me upon a commands I was told to give him. With that the dog trainer took him away from me and received the same kind of growling and viciousness that I had received from this cute little ankle biter, the more commands he gave to the dog, the more vicious the dog became. They were simple commands BTW. The dog trainer concluded that he was not a safe dog to be exposed to little children. As a matter of fact the dog tried to attack the trainer. The trainer was giving him very simple commands. As it turned out he actually had to swing him on his leash in a circular motion. That was it for me. Needless to say I hate pit bulls. They are not to be be trusted. Poor soul who lost his life because of a dang vicious dog.

The prey instinct is large in most dogs. Most breeds were bred to work specific issues. Sheep dogs, rat control, hunting, retrieval, guarding, etc. I do carry a gun.

LOL. I want to clarify this.......I was simply quoting my vet, I don’t have a strong opinion of pit bulls. I am a dachshund person, raising my fourth.....

Oh, yeah, for a pit bull they use a stun gun and a poll. For a toy poodle, they just shoot 'em on sight.

The pit bull was black, and the white cops were afraid of riots. You can shoot a white dog. /s

That’s crazy talk. Sheepdogs are no different than any other dark. They have to be nurtured to become sheepdogs. ;-)

Really?
Pit bulls were bred to kill.
It will take generations to breed that out of them.
It’s a fantasy description of the dog.
The dog is not a fault, the fault belongs to the original breeder and subsequent breeders.
As a side note pit referred to the pits theses dogs were thrown into, to fight to the death.

Best, most beautiful, most protective--Border Collies. Had a trained protector Border Collie when husband was military. He knew his territory and was very protective of me and our 3 children. He never offered to hurt a woman or child, but growled at all strange men.He was grown and fully trained by a military man shipped where he couldn't take Apache, when he came to us. Only dog I ever let live in my house, including 2 miniature poodles, because he was so sweet and well trained.

Don't know why anyone would want a pit and many other "attack" dogs. They are ugly and not too smart.

It just as easily could have been a dachshund

A dachshund may bite you (one bit me when I was about six), but a pit bull will rip your throat out. Big difference.

It is sad when pitbulls kill non-owners. When the “responsible” owners are killed by their “baby”, all I can say is Good Riddance!

If you read the actual account. The pits were closed in a room in another part of the house during babysitting per agreement between owner and parents. She went to let the dogs into their dog run (outside) but she didn’t want to leave the infant alone. She placed the infant on her hip and walked to the door to let the dogs out into the dog run. Both dogs raced past her as they normally did. They suddenly returned and attacked the owner to get to the baby.

By this I mean they ran up to their owner and seized her by the thigh to pull her and the baby to the ground. The dogs pounced on the baby and the owner threw her body over the baby to put herself between the attacking dogs and the baby. The dogs, in full attack mode, began digging under her body to get to the baby. They were nipping her (owner) but digging for the baby.

At some point she dragged herself and the baby to the door. The dogs attacked her again to get to the baby. What followed was too horrible for her to recall. She became aware that she had gotten inside with the mauled baby on the couch and from there called the police. During her ordeal, staff at a business across the street from her had to have heard her sustained screams for help but no one from the business bothered to get involved. She never felt the same about people there after that.

The dogs were gently raised and were gradually introduced to the baby under supervision but kept in a separate room during actual babysitting. At one point, the father recalls the parents and the owner hovering over the baby as the baby sat in a stroller and the dogs gently sniffed and licked the baby’s face. They were trying to insure that the dogs “licked” the baby even if they were in another room. In hindsight, the father is horrified to see pictures of teh massive oversized heads of the pits so close to his baby’s face and recall that day - that he bought the myth of the dogs having a “bad rap” etc.

Pits kill more people in the US then all other dog breeds combined. While they cause devastating injury to children (removing the child’s jaw or face), pits kill more adults in their prime than children. The documented deaths and maimings are statistics that prove the dog is not suitable for domestic life - they are what they are and should be treated like wild animals. The recorded death statistics reflect the truth about a type of dog bred to attack without warning and to hang on (grip) and thrash like a shark to remove chunks of flesh and limb and to not top doing this until they “win.”

“licked” should have been “liked” - they wanted the dogs to like or at least not fear the baby or regard the baby as a stranger.
