From the article:

The seismic wave data suggests that crystals in the "inner inner core" are aligned in an east-to-west direction - flipped on their side, if you are looking down at our planet from high above the North Pole.

The core, which lies more than 5,000km down, started to solidify about a billion years ago - and it continues to grow about 0.5mm each year.

Sounds like a bunch of super computer simulations, interpretations and guess-ta-mations going on there :)

Somehow I think reading the composition of the Earth’s core from echoes of earthquakes is like reading the future from tea leaves.

There are vast amounts of gold, metals, and diamonds just a thousand miles away. Unfortunately we have a far easier time reaching Mars 50 million miles away than reaching Earth’s core.

Thanks to Algore, we all know now that it’s millllyons and millllyons degrees down there too.

Let’s see....

The equatorial axis of the Earth is 9 degrees.

The elliptic of the planets relative to the Sun is 9 degrees.

Uh...ya...no Creator....just an accident.

Research from China and the US suggests that the innermost core of our planet has another, distinct region at its centre.

Yeah, that would be Pellucidar

Without being able to drill into the heart of the Earth, its make-up is something of a mystery.

Ninety-nine percent of American "journalists" would have written "...somewhat of a mystery."

Prof Song and his colleagues in China say this data suggests that the Earth’s inner core - a solid region that is about the size of the Moon - is made up of ... green cheese.

(sorry)

Anyway, I for one am glad the core is molten iron, so that the rotation of the earth creates a magnetic field, so that the solar wind doesn’t blow all our atmosphere away.
