Diet Soda Linked to Increased Belly Fat in Older Adults

Older adults who drink diet soda may experience greater increases in their waist size over a decade than those who do not drink diet soda, according to a new study.

Researchers found that the average increase in waist circumference among the people in the study who drank diet soda daily was more than triple that of the people who did not drink diet soda. Among the people who drank diet soda only occasionally, the increase was more than double that of those who did not drink diet soda.

"The more people drank diet sodas, the more their waistlines expanded," said study author Sharon Fowler, a researcher at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

Over the nine-year study, the waist size of the people who didn't drink any soda increased by an average of 0.8 inches. The average increase was 1.83 inches among those who drank diet soda occasionally, and 3.16 inches among those who drank it daily, according to the study.

In the study, the researchers followed a total of 749 Mexican Americans and European Americans who were 65 or older when the study started. The researchers asked them about their diet soda intake, and measured their waist circumference, height and weight when the study began, and at three follow-up points during the study period. Increased belly fat, which is usually what causes increased waist circumference, may raise people's risk of cardiovascular disease and other health issues because it increases inflammation, Fowler said.

I stopped drinking diet, went to tea or water, but I did notice that I craved sweets after drinking a diet soda...hit me hard like my brain knew I wasn’t getting the real deal. Fortunately I still fit my pants I did 10 years ago.

I drink a lot of diet coke or pepsi. I’ve found I can lose weight without changing that consumption. I just stop the chocolate and pizza... and the ice cream at bedtime. I do run a couple of miles every other day. That helps too :)

I always have a diet soda when I go to Golden Corral, and my waistline has been expanding. I guess the story is right!

Could it be “Butterfield’s Paradox”?

I drink about 3-4 Nalgenes (32 ozs. capacity) per day...

A change of pace is nice sometimes...Coke Zero or Diet Mt. Dew is what I look for at FF joints if no tea.

I do have a small vice though...Throwback Mt. Dew made with real sugar. 1 or 2 per week.

A few years ago, I was drinking up to 6 diet sodas per day...quit cold turkey.

This is my “Big Egg” theory (so-named by PLMerite)

“They” are rich.”

Maybe, but I stopped drinking diet soda when I was 23 and lost 15 pounds over the next 2 months, even though I replaced it with regular soda. About a year later I stopped drinking soda completely and lost a few more pounds.

Artificial sweeteners can really mess up your body.

I used to drink a lot of diet sodas, at one point I was up to 6 cans per day, but really cut it back to almost 0 per week...maybe 1 or 2 now.

It’s the late night eating/binging that will get you. I cut out my macadamia “turtles”, and Cheez-Its at bedtime.

I’m trying like heck to cut out pastas/breads...but man, it’s like an addiction to carbs...

But you smashed the nail on the head...if you burn it, you can eat it...

So what are they saying? That diet soda actually causes you to get fat? Typical shallow article that doesn’t delve into causation vs. correlation.

Perhaps they’ve gotten the cause and effect reversed....I figure people with a weight problem or have struggled with weight during their life are more likely to drink diet sodas, and people that have never had a weight problem are more likely to drink regular sodas. So if that is the case it would make sense that the people who drank diet sodas gained more weight, because they were genetically predisposed to gain weight in the first place, the diet soda had nothing to do with it one way or the other.

I stopped artificial sweeteners when I realized they gave me the munchies.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with good old sugar...in moderation.

100% of all people that fall off of bikes were seen to be riding bikes. 100% of people that don’t ride bikes never hurt themselves riding a bike.

Bikes need to be banned

You’re right, I just hate the taste of pop with sugar in it...its like 10 teaspoons full of it. A little sugar here and there aint gonna hurt.
