Can Donald Trump Really Block Ford Motor Company From Expanding Into Mexico?

American business magnate, Donald Trump said in his announcement to run for President on Tuesday, that he will levy punitive taxes on America’s second largest automaker, Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) if the company continues with its $2.5 billion expansion plans in Mexico, which he said will cause thousands to lose their jobs in the US.

Referring to “Ford’s head” – likely the company CEO Mark Fields – as someone he knows, Mr. Trump said he will call him to share the “bad news”.

Ford is an international conglomerate now. We already have some tariffs on foreign automobile production, and the results have been Mercedes in Carolina, Honda in Ohio, Mitsubishi in Indiana, Toyota in California etc. (list may not be current but you get the idea). So tariffs do not have a completely negative impact.

An utterly punitive tariff against Mexico (which along with Canada now enjoys breaks due to trade agreements) would mean that Ford would convert their plants to 100% non-U.S. shipping, possibly as a spinoff or subsidiary. Trump knows that; he’s a high-level businessman. If Ford shutters or sells plants, then we can expect more Mexicans streaming across the border.

Ford is the last American centered car manufacturer that didn’t go bankrupt and let Obama stiff the stock holders. The rest of Trump’s plan will tend to raise the entry level price of having a car, that will filter all the way down to the used car market. OSHA and the EPA have done a heck of a job already with mandatory safety, emissions and CAFE standards, so that the cheapest car available is about $13K out the door, and a baseline family car is more like $25K.

I’m just saying.

It doesn’t help anyone to use that term, to speak of the Japanese people.

Ever.

But I appreciate your support. I agree with your point, just have an issue with using such loaded terms, I hope you understand.

Thank you.

Trump needs to give them a reason to stay..

The Givemedat crowd can’t build a car. (even if they can, they won’t)
Illegals can’t be a reliable work force.
If Ford managed to find enough bodies to build their cars, they would demand a “living” wage of 40+ dollars per hour.
Federal, state, local taxes will eat them alive
EPA regulations will cost them millions to comply with
it’ll take years to get all the agencies approvals to build the plant. Maybe longer if the environuts get a hair up their ass and want to fight the new plant
The unions would want in and their cut

Now.. reasons to build them in the US of A

There is uhhhh

Ya, I’d build cars somewhere else too.

I get too lazy to type out “Japanese”. Did you know that Japan is called Nippon by the Japanese? So they are Nips and I don’t mean anything malicious.

as in>>
“Japan’s All Nippon Airways now in 10 North American cities”

Just saying.

There are undoubtedly people who will interpret that term negatively.

I just wanted to point that out. If you’ve going to use it, I just want to go on record opposed to its use.

I don’t think bashing the Japanese people will really contribute anything but riling up the opposition.

And yes, that is how I see the term. It’s to me, a holdout from when we were at war so long ago, and I really don’t think it has any place in a dignified discussion these days.

Just my opinion.

YMMV.

If you listen to Donald Trump he says he plans to renegotiate every trade agreement we have which would include NAFTA. He also wants to lower the corporate tax rate. All of which would make it a lot more appealing for these companies to stay in the US. Or come back to the US.

Many, if not all of them except Benz, have assembly plants in the lower 48. DT wants Ford to keep morre of THEIRS here. If he can make this Country industry-friendly again, and straighten out the tax laws so that businesses WANT to be here again, I’d be for him. Right now I’m watching Brother Cruz real close.

That’s not a meaningful comparison, not by a long shot.

But I’ll bet you already know that.
..............................................

I posted my comment about Trump sounding a little like Obama with hesitation because I know how many freepers seem to enjoy just throwing around accusations and personal attacks instead of engaging in a discussion.

I meant what I said as far as Trump sounding a little Obama to me. In effect they are achieving the same thing with companies they disagree with. I'm not sure what I think of Trump. I LOVE much of what I hear but need to hear much more to feel truly comfortable with him as a serious candidate. Instead of being a wiseass, why not enter into a discussion rather than insult?

I will never vote for trump. He is for “assault weapons” ban, waiting periods, and at best wishy-washy on abortion.

He could have the best economic position in the entire field, which I don’t believe he does, but there is no way I would believe he is conservative.

I don’t know why people are fooled by him thinking he’s conservative, its the same with people who believe Carson is a conservative.

Heres a hint, if someone believes more government is the answer to the problem, they aren’t conservative.

I don’t know about the “assault weapons ban” point.

I agree he was advocating for that 15 years ago. I haven’t found any evidence he’s still supporting that.

To tell the truth however, I also have not found any evidence he’s not supporting that now. It seems to have completely dropped off the radar screen.

He now claims to strongly support the Second Amendment.

I welcome anyone with any more recent information on this, it is an important issue.

FReegards.

So you're saying Obama got the idea to bankrupt coal fired power plants from Trump. Where did Trump say he would bankrupt anyone?
If you could see through your hatred, did you ever stop to think he might try to reverse the causes (AKA government regulations) that made Ford move to Mexico in the first place?
..............................................

Wow, you might want to do some self introspection before throwing around ‘hatred’ labels. Saying that Trump sounds a little like Obama translates into me hating him and that he took the idea from Obama?

I simply meant what I said. I love much of what Trump says (read my previous post to your another snap judging poster like yourself). Just looking to learn from freepers who may know more than me. But I prefer replies without baseless, presumptuous attacks.

No, your logic is flawed.
(irritating reply, huh?)

Why not tell me where the flaw is instead of simply telling me I’m wrong?

Somebody ought to write a book on the history of ethnic slurs.

My personal favorite is “Polack,” for a person of Polish ancestry or origin.

The odd thing is that Polack is the Polish word for Pole.

It’s as if American were to become a slur.

There is a brush fire of protectionism traveling across the country and soon it will be a conflagration consuming every politician that stands in opposition.

Trump is it's siren.

There is enormous change afoot in this country, and the world.

Soon Gallup will shine a light on this mood and the political establishment of both parties will be terrified.

And that light is likely to shine before Nov 2016.
