I never understood if Paul was talking about native Cretans or Jews living in Crete.

Cretans had some spectacular natural disasters just before the dark period and also traded with some sea-going peoples.

I suspect hot-shot Roman Paul tried some proselytizing among the descendents of the Minoan and Mycenaean Greeks and had the same success he had with the (then) modern Athenian Greeks, and concluded they were all hopelessly stupid.

Paul is quoting from Epimenides of Crete (lived about 600 B.C.) who called the Cretans liars for saying that Zeus died...apparently a local Cretan god which died had been equated with the Olympian god Zeus.

If Epimenides was a Cretan and he said that Cretans are always liars, was Epimenides telling the truth when he said that?
