People are quick to have a laugh with this story, but rarely discussed is the most likely reason he felt this way.
Mr. Ripple has had recent heart surgery, and since then, has been prone to periods of depression. He was undiagnosed with this condition when he robbed the bank. Thus, he was not being medicated for depression.

Mr. Ripple is now on the appropriate medication and says he feels like his old self again. I have often heard that certain surgical procedures, such as heart surgery, can change a person’s personality dramatically, even after the initial recovery time.

I had a bypass in 2000, during the post election drama. I don't know about it changing personalities, but it sure as hell can slam you with depression. I also had Postperfusion Syndrome (Pump Head) for about a month and a half. You can't think straight at all. Read a paragraph in a book and you can't remember what you're reading about halfway through the paragraph.
