Police are investigating a Denver high school's administration after video surfaced of cheerleaders being forced into doing splits, NBC affiliate KUSA reported.

The video shows an incoming freshman at East High School surrounded by teammates and a coach in June during the first week of cheer camp. The girl screams in pain and repeatedly cries "please stop" as the group tries to force her legs into a split. KUSA received seven similar videos.

The school's principal, cheer coach, assistant cheer coach and an assistant principal, as well as Denver Public Schools deputy general counsel, have been placed on leave during the investigation.

I just assume that if someone is not able to do the splits that it takes time and patience. Sure it is a little painful, but it shouldn’t be injurious, and never forced on someone.

If nothing else, it appeared that they enjoyed hurting her.

The girls helping to hurt her were enjoying it.

100% true. They are laughing at her pain, and reveling in hurting her.

I believe a lawsuit is more than justified.

Racism. Straight up.

Coach included. He didn’t even ask if she was all right.

About 20 years ago. In fact more time is lost from practice/game time from cheerleading injuries than any other sport. I have a niece who did competitive cheerleading and broke both ankles, both wrists, tore her PCL all cheerleading while tumbling. Got a scholarship to an SEC school to cheer though.

I don’t know about this. The girl obviously wants to be a cheerleader. This is cheerleader TRAINING. Cheerleaders need to be able to do the splits. Part of training is physical training...the ability to perform physical tasks which often means pain. They weren’t being mean about it...they were teaching her that the pain was temporary and that she could do it.

Maybe it was the choice of him or a lesbian.

Glad to see you have moderated your position some. While encouraging athletes to push beyond their initial point of resistance is appropriate, this kind of physical force was totally uncalled for and it seems the school agrees:

Denver Public Schools superintendent Tom Boasberg calls the videos “extremely distressing.” He says the school’s principal and an assistant principal, the cheer coach and his assistant and a district lawyer have been placed on leave during the investigation.

“We absolutely prohibit any practices that place our students’ physical and mental health in jeopardy,” Boasberg wrote. “We do not and will not allow any situation in which a student is forced to perform an activity or exercise beyond the point at which they express their desire to stop.”

it was not as malicious as the lead in says..however, is this the norm?....I can understand increasing the stretching every day to a point...

Yep. One has to do it gradually to avoid injury. Was taught only to go to the point of where it’s uncomfortable and stay there and not to go beyond.

I was able to do front splits but not side.....no matter how hard I tried. I guess I just wasn’t built to do that, although pretty limber.

Uhhmmm, I went to this school when it was very integrated. I was blond and in a “minority” of about 5%. I don’t believe we had any caucasian cheerleaders at that time. It is more “diverse” today than it was when I attended. Busing started my senior year and I was not a candidate. They were not letting me go as they needed the numbers.

Curious about that as well.

Aren't cheerleading coaches supposed to be lesbians?

The second video shows that she tore muscle tissue, pulled a hamstring muscle, and had to undergo physical therapy. So I would say this crossed the line.
