I know quite a lot about computer and robot technology, and I have a good grasp of what is possible. We are almost to the point where a lot of labor can be done by humanoid style robots, and we will soon reach a point where they are the preferred answer for employers.
A work force that doesn't complain, works for pennies per hour, and doesn't require the support necessary for people is a no brainer. It's coming, and people are fools if they think it won't affect their lives.
Already computers are taking over much Lawyer work, much accounting work, and they are making inroads into Doctor work such as diagnosis and surgery.
We are approaching a future where humans become superfluous to the people who own the machines. People making jokes about "Luddites" are just displaying a colossal ignorance about the potential future. It can turn very ugly, very quickly.
