John Stossel: Saving kids from government schools (amazing results at NYC charter schools)
Fox News ^ | 2 14 2018 | John Stossel

Posted on 02/14/2018 7:27:53 AM PST by dennisw

Kids attending New York City's Success Academy charter schools do remarkably well.

"We are No. 1 in student achievement in the state," says founder Eva Moskowitz, "outperforming all the wealthy suburbs."

They do. Although they teach mostly poor kids, 95 percent pass the state math test, and 84 percent pass the English test. Pass rates at government run schools are 38 and 41 percent. How does Success Academy do it?

"China and India are not worrying about the length of the school day," she replied. "We have to toughen up."

From what I saw, "toughening up" doesn't make kids hate school. Many told me they "look forward" to going to Success Academy in the morning. One called school "rockin' awesome!"

"Kids like succeeding," explains Moskowitz.

The education establishment hates Moskowitz.

When she tries to open new schools, activists protest. Mayor Bill de Blasio complained, "It's time for Eva Moskowitz to stop having the run of the place!"

"Why do they hate you?" I asked.

"What we prove is that there's nothing wrong with the children," she replied. "There is something wrong with a system, a monopolistic system that is not allowing kids to succeed."

Mayor de Blasio got his political start as a socialist, has praised Cuba and Venezuela, and isn't fond of competition. To protect New York City's taxi industry, he tried to block Uber and Lyft.

He doesn't understand that competition helps more people than it hurts.

Some specific criticisms of charters like Success Academy:

Criticism No. 1. They are "a scam," says "Young Turks" TV commentator Nomiki Konst, "better funded -- by these hedge funders -- and they're performing worse than underfunded schools."

Charters like Success Academy do more with less. New York City's regular public schools get $20,000 per pupil.

"I only get $14,500," says Moskowitz.

the problem all large-city public schools that doom them to failure

- Unions. Can’t fire problem/non-performing teachers
- Discipline. Can’t “fire” or manage problem students.

To draw a finer bead on what is going on, you need to connect these two statements:

“China and India are not worrying about the length of the school day,” she replied. “We have to toughen up.”

“There is something wrong with a system, a monopolistic system that is not allowing kids to succeed.”

Both these countries have monopolistic systems so therefore it is possible to have a successful educational system within that structure.

The problem we have in the United States monopolistic system is one that it is liberal, anti-American, anti-Christian, anti-capitalistic and whose goal, as per the admission of the ones who structured it, is changing the United States. I personally have heard them brag about it. Education is not the end goal of American education. The eradication of the traditional American nation is.

You left out a terrible curriculum... that parrots social justice causes but fails to teach reading, math, science and true American History.

Indeed. These charter schools have majority kids and parents who want to win. Public schools have majority kids and parents who don't give a rip.

Suck out the winners from public schools and you have a motivated group with supportive families. Left in the public schools are an unmotivated group with fewer supportive families. Public advocates hate it when their mediocrity is highlighted ....

Public schools are not willing to failing kids fail - so few do. Those teachers that do have "too many" kids fail are reprimanded or fired. What should be happening is making kids accountable for learning. If they don't learn it, they fail. It would be amazing how fast the winners would learn to win.

The trouble with the article is it doesn’t go far enough and explain what this charter school does that enables its students to succeed while those of the neighboring public schools are failing so badly. What are the curriculum and discipline differences that could be used by the public schools?

Interesting timing on the Stossel article, with no mention that just over a week ago an organization closely tied to Moskowitz shut down. You can be in favor of reforming the public school system without tying yourself to a Michael Bloomberg-loving scam artist Democrat like Moskowitz.

I am not sure if your question is rhetorical.. but classic Christian literature, actually having kids put pen to paper, grammar, spelling words and actually teaching math.. to start..

This is a big scam. These tiny charter schools that have good test scores skim the top few percent of poor students from NYC schools and kick them out if they flunk or misbehave. It has no relevance to improving the performance of the great mass of students who are not intellectually gifted.

“I only get $14,500...”

That’s still more money than many suburban districts in the NYC area.

Eva Moskowitz is a Democrat, a former New York City Council member, a liberal. But she’s right about this. The public schools, especially in the inner cities, are failing the children — and from what we know about progressivism, likely deliberately so.

That’s why they fight school choice, especially when minorities are concerned. How can you keep the underclass under if you educate them?

This is one of the proofs that the left regards minorities not as people but as property — THEIR property. And it’s time we said so, repeatedly.

And they don’t care one whit about kids — because they don’t care one whit about ANYONE but themselves.

School choice is one of teh new civil rights battlegrounds, and the progressive left is on teh same side they’ve always been on : the side of opposing civil rights.

Failed public schools are a direct result of Liberal politics/payoffs. Funny, it’s typically inner city schools that fail the very people that vote for these liberals.

I can answer that
You have to make learning FUN
it’s the age old dilemma
I got turned on in Chemistry class to science by my teacher blowing up things and setting things on fire spontaneously
I liked the stuff so much ( sodium metal and phosphorus dissolved in CS2) that I stole it so me and my friends could have fun
Another example.
I happened upon a hydrogen car convention in 1990 and it set my career into hydrogen and renewable energy Still doing it
Bottom line
As an adult when done school. You have to find something you like to do that someone will pay you to do
My daughter 17 hated school. Dropped out got a GED.
started work right away as a chef in 5 Star restaurants
Now going to chef school and also got picked up off the street to be a model as well
Find a passion. Persue it !

How do you deal with the enviro-whackos, warmists and other crazies who must infest your profession?

Remember kiddos, many slave-owners would beat their slaves if they caught them trying to read or otherwise educate themselves.
