I knew Coasties (non-coms and retired)in the 90s. Not only left, but culturally radical. At the time, I just chalked it up to generational differences.
Seems USCG was a way to avoid combat, sabotage and still claim patriot.
The ex-Coastie I know is rock conservative. Rescue helicopter pilot. Lt Cmdr Vietnam. Absolutely wonderful man.
