I'll kick it off with a band from the late 80's - early 90's that would be easy to dismiss as that sort of jangly Brit-pop that was so popular at the time, but then you get into the lyrics, so... biting, almost apocalyptic. And the music itself, very tight with a lot of surprises for the close listener.
World Party.

I’ve always liked the Little River Band. “Reminiscing” never gets old, IMHO.

Question: Underrated by whom?
I think Social Distortion is underrated by many “regular” rock and roll fans because they were labeled a “punk band”. When I listen to them what I hear is well-played, straight-up, rock-n-roll.

I always liked this one:
Run Home Girl, by Manchester (England) band Sad Café. Pretty much a one-hit wonder though.
Not a band, but I've always loved the late Kenny Rankin. Here's a sample: In The Name Of Love.
