working class shorthand for ‘choir’ I imagine, from 500 years ago..

I am familiar with that section of a church from Anglican churches I have been in, but always assumed it was spelled “choir”. I had to look it up to see if “quire” referred to the same thing. Apparently both spellings are acceptable.
